Screening Process

Safety Requirement

The MRI magnet is always on. To ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and equipment, the UNLV MR Imaging Core follows a strict multi-stage screening protocol.

Understanding the Four MRI Safety Zones

The UNLV MR Imaging Core is divided into four progressively restricted zones. Access becomes more controlled and the magnetic risk greater as you move from Zone I toward Zone IV.

Screening Process & Metal Detector

1. Pre-Screening (Online/Paper)

Before arriving at the facility, all participants and researchers must complete the MRI Screening Form. This identifies internal contraindications such as:

  • Pacemakers, neurostimulators, or cochlear implants

  • Surgical clips, stents, or metallic implants

  • Possibility of pregnancy or history of metal fragments in the eyes

2. Physical Preparation (The Changing Zone)

Before approaching the Magnet Room (Zone IV), individuals must:

  • Remove all personal items: Watches, cell phones, credit cards, keys, and jewelry.

  • Change into participant gown: To eliniate "hidden" metal (like silver-threaded athletic wear or heavy zippers(, UMIC requires all participants to change into provided attire.

  • Lockers: Secure lockers are provided for all metallic and electronic items.

3. The Final Check: Door-Mounted Metal Detector

UMIC utilizes an installed Ferromagnetic Metal Detector at the entrance of zone IV.

  • The Threshold Test: Every person must pass through the door-mounted detector slowly.

  • Alarm Protocol: If the detector lights up or sounds an alarm, the individual must return to the changing zone to identify the source of the metal.

  • Zero-Tolerance: Entry is strictly prohibited until the person can pass through the detector without triggering an alert.

4. Technician Verification

The Level 3 MRI Technologist Minerva Massis has the final authority. They will perform a final verbal confirmation of the screening form and a visual inspection of the participant before granting entry into the magnet bore.
